Clarification on complementary, homeopathic and herbal veterinary products in ATCvet
Published Thursday July 16 2026

The ATCvet Working Group has clarified the classification of complementary, homeopathic, and herbal traditional medicinal products for veterinary use. Generally, these products are not included in the ATCvet system. However, exceptions can be made for products that regulatory authorities have assessed and approved based on comprehensive data regarding their efficacy, safety, and quality. For example, herbal medicines with well-established medicinal use and supporting documentation may be included.

During its latest meeting, the ATCvet Working Group established a new group, QV50Q - Other veterinary products. This group is intended for veterinary products that cannot be officially classified within the existing ATCvet system but still require an ATCvet code for specific, often national, purposes. National authorities may further subdivide this category by establishing their own national codes under QV50Q when more detailed classification is needed.

This decision aims to provide flexibility and clarity in the classification of a growing range of veterinary medicinal products.
